What is big and yellow and lives in a recycle bin?

It’s 2009 and I just received my new Yellow Pages directory.  I arrive home to find it sitting on my doorstep, like a package from a friend or a special delivery.  I pick it up and carry it inside setting it carefully on the counter.  I walk to the other end of my kitchen and open the laptop that is a staple on my eating bar and I  review the events of the day.

As I surf through my favorite news sites with a possible indulgence in a retail site or two, I glance down the bar and see the directory – the big, cumbersome annoying directory – that has been a staple in my household since I was a kid and I ask, “do I need this, is it of use to me, why do I keep it, did I even open last year’s?

Can you buy the number one spot on Google? Well, here’s the thing: you can and you can’t.  You can’t call up Google and  ask for the number-one spot for  “women’s sexy shoes.” But you can make a wise marketing spend on a thing called SEM.

Let’s take a moment to understand which #1 we are talking about.  On a typical Google search results page, there are two #1 spots:  the number one spot  for the Search Engine Optimized (SEO) result  vs. the # 1 spot for the  Search Engine Marketing (SEM) result.  When viewing the page, the SEM results are at the top and called “Sponsored Links” – referring to the fact that people are paying to be there.
