ClearMotive awarded Honda Canada MC/PE Agency of Record

Posted on February 1, 2012 by Chad Kroeker  |  No Comments

It’s not every day you’re given the opportunity to do professionally what you’ve dreamed about nearly all your life.

ClearMotive has been involved with Honda Canada at various levels since 2001. As the Marketing Manager for Calgary’s own Blackfoot Motosports, my responsibilities included the advertising and promotion for Honda Canada’s national motocross team. I wrote press releases for each race, designed all team apparel, posters, bike graphics, rider gear and dealt with all of the sponsors, media and industry publications. I’m not sure I truly appreciated all of the relationships I had at the time, and the valuable experience I was gaining.

I’ve always believed that if you persistently focus on what you’re sincerely passionate about, everything else will fall into place.

In 2007 I found a great friend, client and obvious professional match in Tyler Chisholm. We quickly realized the potential of building a business together and now exactly 5 years later, ClearMotive has grown to 12 staff and a handful of contractors occupying 2 stories of the Demcor loft in the beltline of Calgary, AB. Recently recognized as one of Canada’s fastest growing companies by Profit Magazine and Alberta Venture, we are grateful, honored and proud to be earning our place in the Canadian Advertising Industry.

In September 2011, Honda Canada approached ClearMotive along with three other well known agencies in Canada (all with whom they had worked with in the past) with the opportunity to become their exclusive Agency of Record. Honda’s goal was to engage an agency that had the industry experience and capacity to manage all marketing and advertising campaigns for Motorcycle, ATV, Marine, Power Equipment and Engine (MC/PE). With 10 years of experience working with Honda Canada, we were confident in our product knowledge, honored to be recognized as one of their chosen agencies, and yet very anxious about the possibility of losing the business we had worked so hard to gain.

The day we learned about the opportunity, Tyler and I pledged to each other that we would do everything in our power to win the business. We had the right team, the right experience and after all, we absolutely loved the product. We couldn’t think of a better client for our business… We were born for this.

Immediately we went to our mentors. We leaned on our industry and professional relationships to collaborate on ideas, hired a professional presentation coach to help us prepare and perform an inspiring presentation, and then developed a custom, mobile, online campaign management tool (a tool that we’re now using for all of our clients).

Perhaps the most critical factors to our success, was Tyler reaching out to his TEC “Tiger” group of business mentors, to sit in on our presentation and provide their feedback. Words can not describe the value we received from presenting in front of some of Canada’s most influential business leaders. It was uncomfortable, stressful, a bit discouraging and one of the most useful nights of my professional life. Thank you, to TEC Canada and Tyler’s entire team of mentors: your feedback, insights and counsel have greatly impacted our business.

On November 16, 2011 we flew to Toronto and presented at Honda head office in Markham, ON. Our one key point to communicate was why ClearMotive was the best choice: We are an expert team with industry experience, product knowledge, project leadership skills and enterprise level tools. Then proceeded to back it all up with rationale, tools and facts.

On November 18 we waited.

Finally on December 13, we received an email from Honda, requesting a phone call in 10 minutes. Those may have been the longest 10 minutes of my life, until the first 3 minutes of the phone call before we heard the words:

“The decision is unanimous among the entire advertising team here at Honda, we have chosen ClearMotive.”

Tyler and I remained professional for the remainder of the phone call, thanked Honda for their trust in ClearMotive, hung up and then ran screaming through the halls to the rest of the team to celebrate the great news!

It’s incredible when you put in the good old-fashioned hard work to win. We are grateful for the opportunity, confident in our team and ready for the challenge.

Tyler and I are excited to have won the trust of Honda Canada, and equally excited to help build the motorcycle industry in Canada. 2012 presents an exciting time for Canadian business, and we’re privileged to be a part of it.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy days to celebrate a victory for ClearMotive, and a victory for Canadian business. Get ready for a great year!

- Chad Kroeker, Chief Creative Officer

Red Express – A toys for kids project

Posted on November 29, 2011 by Tyler Chisholm  |  No Comments

Behind every great idea there is a simple story, a story that when told can make you say things like, “wow, why didn’t I think of that?” or, “that is a great idea, how can I take part?”.  The story behind Red Express is just one of those stories.  It is a tale of showing your customers how much you care about them by caring for the people that need it the most!  Red Express is about making Calgary children smile over the holidays by giving them the gift of toys that they may not have otherwise had.

It all started in 2007 when I was looking for a better way to show appreciation for our customers over the holidays.  I simply was not happy with the status quo of the corporate Christmas card or gift basket, it just seemed like a poor way to deliver that message.  I needed to find a better way!  And with any good business challenge you need to clearly identify the outcome you are looking for.  I was looking for a way to tell our customers that we appreciate them and that we value their business.  So, was a Christmas card actually doing that, or was it simply crossing their desk and finding its way into the recycling bin?  That was certainly what happened to the cards that crossed my desk.

As I sat with this dilemma I was at lunch with a close friend of mine who was involved with the CUPS One World Child Development Centre.  As she told me about the amazing programs they offer and how their system works to not only support the less fortunate children of Calgary, but to provide a network for the entire family unit.  A light bulb went off!  Why not buy toys for the children of CUPS with the money that we normally spent on Corporate Christmas cards and  send our customers an e-newsletter with pics of what we did on their behalf?  It was perfect!

The next step was to meet with CUPS to gain a little more understanding of who they are and what they do.  For those of you who have not had the chance to meet and speak with Carlene Donnelly, CUPS Executive Director, I could not recommend it more.  Her passion and drive for the CUPS organization is infectious and inspiring.

It was settled, we were going to buy toys for the children of CUPS and let our customers know what we did with the Corporate Christmas budget.

To truly tell the story of Red Express I have to share the personal experience I had when we dropped off the toys for the first time. It was the Thursday before Christmas and my wife and I arrived at the CUPS One World Child Development Centre with my 4Runner filled to the brim with toys.  CUPS was having their Christmas party the following Friday– our timing was perfect.  This is when things became very real for me.  As we were leaving the toys at the foot of the Christmas tree, I turned to my wife and asked what I thought was an innocent question, “If we had not have brought these toys what would the kids have received at the party?”. She looked at me and said, “ they wouldn’t have”.  That was it for me right then and there, this was going to become more than just a better way to let our customers know we appreciate them, it was going to be a mission to ensure that as many children as possible received a gift at Christmas!

Four years later we are aiming for our best year yet, $10,000 in toys and support for CUPS.  A special thanks to company’s like Trendon Bit Services, LifeMark Health and ClearMotive for their support of the Red Express program.

My City’s 31 Days of Totalawesomeness

Posted on September 30, 2011 by Arielle Land  |  No Comments

In the theme of Thanksgiving, ClearMotive will be showing gratitude for something different every day in October. ClearMotive’s spin to being thankful is recognizing totalawesomeness within our city (if you want to learn more about totalawesomeness check out our definition). We appreciate totalawesomeness and strive to be engrossed in it. And this month – we are searching for it.

As a team, we are challenging ourselves to explore what we appreciate the most about the city we live in – Calgary. We all find that living and working in a city, you can lose perspective and take for granted the things that make your city great.

We are also challenging you. Are you thankful for your city? Explore and share with us what you like about where you live – whether it is a historical element, art, a restaurant, an attraction, or the nature within – anything that makes you appreciate the city you live in. Happy October!

Here are our 31 days of totalawesomeness so far:

Oct 1– Tyler: It’s totalawesomeness that I was able to ride my bike yesterday in Calgary’s 26th degree weather.

Oct 2– Arielle: Arielle: I love that Calgary is the Volunteer Capital of Canada where 71% of Calgarians volunteer compared to the national average of 27%. Totalawesomeness.

Oct 3– Daniel: Grateful Calgary is home to Fish Creek Provincial Park, one of North America’s largest urban parks – a city dweller’s brief escape. Totalawesomeness.

Oct 4 – Jeff: With nearly 700km of pathways connecting almost every corner of the city, Calgary boasts the largest urban pathway network in North America! For a runner like me, this is totalawesomeness.

Oct 5 – Sabrina: I think it is total awesomeness that Calgary is home to one of the coolest contemporary performing arts festivals between T.O. and Vancouver. Fluid Movement Arts Festival opens today!

Oct 6 – Aaron: I think it’s totalawesomeness that Calgary is implementing some real cycling infrastructure reform. Bike on!

Oct 7 – Chris: Every year, Calgary fills a 53-ft trailer with non-perishable food for the 18 Wheels of Christmas campaign – all going to the Calgary Food Bank. That’s totalawesomeness.

Oct 8 – Chad: Calgary is the only city in Canada that has a professional motocross track (outdoor) right in the heart of the city. Wild Rose MX Park is just south of Blackfoot Motosports… and home to round 3 of The Canadian Nationals. That’s totalawesomeness.

Oct 9 – Arielle: Calgary sees more days of sunshine than any other major Canadian city. You can call us the sunshine capital! That’s totalawesomeness to me.

Oct 10 – Dan: Love that Calgary has many entrepreneurs following their dreams, one being Belgian baker Manuel Latruwe… his food is totalawesomeness!

Oct 11 – Jeffrey: I love that Calgary is home to Canada’s Sport Hall of Fame, also many of Canada’s top athletes consider Calgary to be their home. That’s totalawsomeness to me!

Oct 12 – Sabrina: Downtown Calgary’s Plus-15 system is North America’s largest indoor network of walk-ways – that is total awesomeness when its -40!

Oct 13 – Aaron: It’s totalawesomeness that the food truck revolution is happening in Calgary. Such a great way to spread the culture of food!

Oct 14 –Arielle: An obvious reason why I love Calgary: we host the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth: The Calgary Stampede. 10 days of free pancakes, cowboy boots, two-steppin, food on a stick, and rodeo! Totalawesomeness!

Oct 15 – Chad: Its totalawesomeness that next year is the 100th anniversary of Stampede!

Oct 16 – Chris: Its one thing to love Ginger Beef, its another to acknowledge the awesome city it was invented in, that’s totalawesomeness Calgary.

Oct 17 – Dan: Seasons are changing. Redeeming to know that Chinook winds will bring warmth throughout Calgary fall & winter – totalawesomeness.

Oct 18 – Jeffrey: The view of the snow-capped Rockies we have from Calgary on a clear crisp day! – totalawesomeness.

Oct 19 – Sabrina: Calgary was named Culture Capital of Canada for 2012. Nenshi was quoted saying “I would argue that the root of Calgary’s success are the fact that we have always had an open society. When you come here nobody cares where you come from or who your daddy is or how much money you have or where you went to school.” Thats totalawesomeness.

Oct 20 – Aaron: U of C students are active in their support of the Calgary Food Bank. Hundreds of participants will be Trick or Eating this Halloween. That is totalawesomeness.

Oct 21 – Chris: It is organizations like The Calgary Mustard Seed that make me a proud Calgarian. I love seeing their tireless efforts of putting an end to homelessness through affordable housing. This is totalawesomeness!

Oct 23 – Stacey (Guest Appearance): What is the coolest thing about Calgary…the invention of THE CAESAR! We took the American’s Bloody Mary and turned it on its head. How many people do you know that love a good Caesar. My personal favorite? Gin Caesar from Original Joes. Totalawesomeness!

Oct 24 – Dan: Thankful for Alberta’s natural resources that Calgary helps steward, in turn, creating opportunities around the world. This is totalawesomeness.

Oct 25 – Jeffrey: You only have to travel 90 mins west of Calgary to reach Banff National Park, which is 6,641 square kilometres of totalawesomeness!

Day 26 – Arielle: In 2010, the Mercer Quality of Living survey ranked Calgary as the #1 Eco-City in the world. With better water and less traffic congestion than hundreds of international cities, our city is totalawesomeness.

Day 27 – Aaron: It is totalawesomness that Calgary’s new Science Centre is opening this Saturday, October the 29th! Go SPARK some curiosity! http://www.sparkscience.ca/

Day 28 – Lornce 2.0 (office fish): It’s totalawesomeness that Calgary has removed the fluoride from our city water. So much healthier for my fish bowl!

Day 30 – Arielle: What makes Calgary totalawesomeness? Naheed Nenshi, our passionate mayor, who always is looking for ways to make Calgary a better city.

Day 31 - Daniel: I’m grateful that Calgary is home to the beautiful Bow River, a world-renowned fly fishing destination. A constant flow of totalawesomeness!

ThoughtFarmer’s Social Intranet Summit is next week!

Together with ThoughtFarmer, ClearMotive creates “turnkey solutions” for companies looking for effective and efficient social intranet solutions.

Our Creative Director, Chad Kroeker and User Experience Designer, Aaron Thompson will be attending the summit this year. Last year ClearMotive gained incredible knowledge and inspiration on how to engage employees, build internal collaboration and centralize corporate resources – all through ThoughtFarmer’s social intranet platform.

In 2009, ClearMotive successfully implemented LifeMark Health’s Social Intranet (LifeMark Touch). Touch has unified a national organization of 120 clinics by providing them with a platform to communicate, share knowledge, find information, and grow their culture. This system continues to gain considerable traffic every month and create efficiencies among staff and leadership.

totalawesomeness

(to•tal•awe•some•ness)

Possessing the quality of being completely impressive.

It’s more than a made up word, totalawesomeness is way of life. It’s like finding out you’ve been bumped up to first class on a trans-Atlantic flight, so you can relax in luxury and catch up on much needed sleep. Or, being given that perfect gift that you’ve always wanted at an unexpected time. This bold quality is what we at ClearMotive strive to inject into our personal and professional lives and most importantly, we aim to create marketing work for our clients that at its core is, totalawesomeness.

What is totalawesomeness to you?
